Against the notwithstanding clause - AB

This letter is a slightly modified version copied from this campaign promoted by Forward Canada: [URGENT – Stop Alberta's government from overriding the Charter of Rights](https://savethecharter.

Honourable Mr Patzer,

I am writing to express my deep concern with Alberta Premier Smith's use of the Notwithstanding Clause to pass laws that limit rights of teachers %28and subsequently trans kids) and silence the courts.

This is the first time in Alberta's history that a government uses the Clause in this way to override the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, but it is not the first time in Canada. The Premiers of other other provinces, included our beloved Saskatchewan, have in similar ways done the same in recent years.

The Clause was intended for rare emergencies, not to protect laws that would fail a constitutional test and surely not to strip fundamental rights away from people. Using it this way sets a dangerous precedent, telling every future government that they can suspend freedom of expression, equality, or conscience with a single vote.

No matter your political party, you have a duty to uphold the rule of law and protect the Charter. I am asking you to oppose this preemptive use of the Notwithstanding Clause and to stand up for democratic accountability and individual rights.

When one government turns off rights, others will follow. Please act to protect the Charter, for all Albertans and all Canadians.

Best Regards, Mauro Meden
